Some facts about the past and present :

The original London exhibition was called ” The Treasures of Tutankhamen”

The travelling exhibition ran from 1972 until 1979

 

First shown at London’s British Museum

Admission was just 50p in 1972

There were long queues,some people waited for over eight hours to get in to see the exhibits.

The total number of visitors to the 1972 exhibition was over 1.7 million visitors.

It was such a success that ALL London excibitions since are measured against it.

The lighting was darkened to set the same atmosphere that Howard Carter had felt when finding the tomb in 1922.

The BBC reported at the time that Britain was being swept with “Tutankhamenophilia”.

The Museum shop sold out of all its king Tut replica Jewelery on the first opening day.

The post office sold over 56 million commemorative stamps to mark the exhibition.
